'4⭐️ ‘The Tears of Monterini’ by Amanda Weinberg
Synopsis
Yacobo Levi, and intellectual dreamer, and Angelo Ghione, a contadino farmer are best friends. Their Jewish and Catholic families live side by side amidst a backdrop of village communal life, Etruscan tales and the rise of Benito Mussolini.
Born on the same day, their children Bella and Rico, grow up and fall in love. With the declaration of the racial laws in 1938, tensions simmer beneath the surface of love and friendship.
When war is finally declared, their peaceful village is torn apart and life will never be the same again.
Thoughts 💭
I’ve been to Italy twice this week, one of my fav places in the whole wide world! Tuscany in itself has some type of magic that I have not met one person who has not fallen for its fragrance, flavours or history.
I entered this book with no idea what I was going to find, I had a time frame (WORLD WAR II) but little more. I’m not sure I’ve ever read before of Jews in Italy and I was honestly surprised by aspects like the racial law.
This story exceed my expectations, it was beautifully written, the prose is just so evocative and compelling that I enjoyed descriptions and moods more than i normally do.
The human element in the book is explored from multiple angles, how we relate to each other, rejections, betrayals, timid love and the purity of friendship. The heart of this novel lies in the value of families and their traditions.
Congratulations @amandaweinbergauthor , this is a fantastic novel, looking forward to reading more from you soon! Many thanks to @lizziexlewis at @reddoorbooks for my copy!'
